YOU WILL SEE HOW MUCH HUMAN BEINGS LOVE EACH OTHER

by Leo Muscato

There is so much passion in Pagliacci, and a ton of love. Three men in love with the same woman: they love her unconditionally, with all the selfishness of those who can not listen to the reasoning of others. Their obtuse blindness will lead to the unacceptable death of the poor woman, killed  in a fit of absurd  madness. All defeated, all unhappy. It does not seem to give way to escape the brightly colored booklet written by Leoncavallo.  The opera was performed in 1892, but the author setting for his story about thirty years before. In order to adhere as much as possible to the proximity in time desired by the author, the story has shifted over time, closer to the present day. They have eliminated all space-time references that could suggest a world folklore and even a little exotic tied  to stereotyped idea of the south. Instead of showing a hypothetical geographic south, it was thought to suggest a concrete southern soul. Because the players were traveling actors that were inspired comedians of the commedia dell'arte, has chosen to tell the universe that revolves around a small and young theater company that stages very funny "masks", close to the student spirit ( and even a little vulgar) inherent in the commedia dell'arte. But this team, was to emerge especially the private, the "behind the scenes", not only of their show, but most of their lives. Hence the need for a set design that would allow the singers to perform concrete actions and evoke a world seemingly realistic, but in fact very abstract. A place in which to live different spaces that allow the viewer to enjoy both more stage actions, so that they can build their own film editing of the story.
